Welcome to the Saint Mary Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church Toronto, a place to learn about the rich history and tradition of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church became the first Christian church to be accepted as an official religion by the nation of Ethiopia in 330 ACE. Ethiopia was also the only black African nation that accepts and defends the Christian faith without colonial influences.
Since its inception the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church has been a major advocate for the moral, social, cultural, educational, artistic, architectural values to the nation. It has tirelessly fought to defend the unity of the nation and the freedom of its people for over 1500 years. Over the centuries it has been threatened by Muslin invaders sponsored by the Ottoman Empire, and Egypt, as well as colonial threats from the European nations of Portugal and Italy. Because the church has been such a resilient defender of the nation, its citizens, and traditions, it has been the constant target of outside threats that persist to this day.
The church has served as the official Ministry of Education until recent years. Always striving for the advancement of wisdom and knowledge, the church gave the Geez and Amharic languages their alphabets, and continues to promote scholarship in the areas of theology, literature, painting, architecture, fine arts, and music.
The church is presently continuing to spread the word of God, not just in Ethiopia, but also throughout the world. The church around the world is an organization that fights for moral and social justice, advances the culture and tradition of Ethiopian Orthodoxy, and serves as a centre of education for those who accept and follow the teaching of the church around the world.
We welcome you to learn and experience the faith of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. It is a life long journey, which must be approached with a tremendous commitment and patience. In return, one will be able to taste the fruits of the faith, which are peace of mind, tranquility, joy of life, and happiness in the process.
